WATCH (7:56): Introduction Film - Unbroken Whispers NESP Research Project 4.3

Return to Community Film Screening

Join us for a special return to community screening of three films created through Unbroken Whispers – The Ripples Connecting Sea-Kin, a National Environmental Science Program (NESP) research project exploring the deep cultural relationships Aboriginal peoples hold with whales, dolphins and other Sea-Kin across south-eastern Australia.

Led by Dr Jodi Edwards and Dr Chels Marshall, the research brings together Aboriginal knowledge, cultural relationships, storytelling and contemporary marine science to explore how Sea-Kin, Country and people are connected through generations of knowledge, responsibility and care.

The three films created by filmmaker and assistant researcher Natalia Baechtold, translate the research, conversations and knowledge shared through the project into visual storytelling.

Through powerful imagery, narration and storytelling, the films invite us to see Sea Country through a different lens — one grounded in cultural knowledge, kinship, responsibility and connection.

Film 01 Through the Eye of Observation - Cultural Evidence Systems (32:58) explores Cultural Evidence Systems and the living knowledge held within Country, Sea-Kin, seasonal cycles, story, ceremony and intergenerational practice.

Film 02 Truth Telling – Peeling Back the Colonial Layer (26:54) asks us to listen to the histories and experiences that have shaped Aboriginal relationships with Sea Country, acknowledging the impacts of colonisation and the disruption of cultural knowledge, relationships and governance.

Film 03 The Way Forward Together – A Path Through Parallel Worlds (35:19) brings these threads together, exploring how Aboriginal knowledge and contemporary marine science can inform a different future — one that recognises whales and dolphins not simply as species to be managed, but as Sea-Kin, relatives, teachers and holders of ancient knowledge.

Together, the films reveal the unbroken whispers carried through generations: knowledge of Country, Sea-Kin, responsibility and belonging that has endured and continues to guide the way forward.

Come and listen. Come and learn. Come and share in the conversation about what it means to belong to Sea Country — and how we might walk forward together.
